It is with great sadness to announce that our President, Nigel Bunce, has passed away at the age of 90 – a pretty good innings both in cricket and in life.

And what an innings it was! We only knew Nigel through cricket, but we know that he served in the RAF for many years, and it was fascinating to hear him talk about his experiences on VE day, during the celebrations earlier this year.

Nigel has served Chesham Bois in many capacities for almost 70 years:

Player 1957 – 1964, Vice Chairman 1985 – 2003, Club President 2006 –

Present Day.

Nigel was a popular and respected member who joined in the 1950’s and remained a dedicated member right up until we last saw him at the end of this season. He would come to both home and away games – not sure, though, if he totally approved of the modern style of cricket and could never relax until we got over the line with a victory! He would always enjoy Shona’s tea, and regale listeners with how cricket has changed since his day.

In his playing days he was a very useful off break bowler and late order batsman. He

stopped playing regularly for the club in the early 1960’s to play for his works team,

Coopers Sports, in Berkhamsted, but did, in fact, appear intermittently for the club in

following years.

He retained his interest in Chesham Bois and has been associated with the club for

over 50 years. Nigel was a willing worker for the club and involved himself in most things, especially as organiser of the successful annual club raffle, which brought in valuable monies for the finances of the club. He was still overseeing the club in the office of President, which he took on in 2006 and assisted the league side as Umpire or Scorer. Along with Bob Beeson he is one of the people most responsible for the  club’s continued existence from the 1990’s to the present day.

Sadly, due to lost score books, we don’t have full career details. However, it is known that Nigel took over 200 wickets for the club and scored just under 1000 runs.

Nigel - Thank you for everything you have done for our club, you will be missed by us all.
