23/8 Soho CC (Home)

Result: Won by 1 wicket

Toss: Soho elected to bat

A thrilling end to the game against Soho with the winning runs being scored with our last pair at the crease. This report will be titled ‘but Gaurav was still there’ for reasons which will become apparent.

Batting first, Soho posted 187-3. Matt and Rajiv opened the bowling. Matt (7-2-6-1) was his customary unplayable self, going for 6 runs off his 7 overs and Rajiv (6-0-19-1) was also miserly. Sachin (5-1-21-0) and Luke (7-0-35-0) then kept the run rate in check. Whilst Soho had been kept reasonably quiet with the bat, not taking wickets gave them a good platform to attack so that by the time Jamien (4-0-35-0), Akshay (4-0-34-0) and Tom (2-0-24-0) were bowling, they were in a pretty attacking frame of mind. 187 was quite a decent score on that wicket.

A heavy shower of rain late in their innings livened up the wicket a little and in reply, the skipper fell early bringing Gaurav to the crease. Alex and Akshay (11) departed leaving us 25-3 but Gaurav was still there. A couple of good knocks from David (19) and Rajiv (31) kept us up with the rate but after Tom and Luke departed we were left on 124-7 still needing 64 runs with only 3 wickets left, but Gaurav was still there. Jamien brilliantly held one end down before eventually falling for 13 followed quickly by Sachin whose powerful, but slightly aerial, cover drive was well directed to their fielder who unfortunately clung on to it. We were now 180-9, 8 runs short and one wicket left, but Gaurav was still there. Gaurav was joined by Matt and although the margin for error for them was now zero, Gaurav got us over the line with a 6 followed by a 4 and finishing on 97 not out. A brilliantly judged and paced innings and quite easily the man of the match performance. As we locked up and left, Gaurav was still there...!!
