With the regular skipper planning to sit this one out, Uma took the reins to marshal a very youthful side assembled with Ollie’s help. Uma lost the toss and, very unusually for this season, we fielded first. This was not an easy wicket to bat on as it had been uncovered during the recent rain and Oscar(5-0-13-1) and Vaibhav(8-0-41-2) made good use of it with Oscar removing one of the openers. Ollie(8-1-22-0) and Kieran(5-0-30-0) replaced the openers as Denham batted with caution only losing their second wicket to a run out with the score on 92 in the 21st over. Sam(7-0-43-4) and Uma(7-0-42-1) were next, regularly removing wickets as Denham looked to accelerate. Vaibhav returned for the final overs, taking 2 wickets in his second spell. The final score 204-9 off 40 overs, a pretty good total on that wicket.
In reply, Alfie, Marcus, Seb, Bennett, Kieran and Vaibhav all recorded low scores on the difficult surface with only Seb(10) hitting double digits. This bought Sam to the crease and at 78-6 and things weren’t looking too good. What followed was one of Chesham Bois finest wins as Uma played the definition of a captains knock, displaying uncharacteristic restraint as he declined to take on the fielders stationed at long off, long on and deep mid wicket. He still hit 11 fours and 2 sixes in his 88 not out, supported by a great attacking innings by Sam who matched Uma’s tally of fours and sixes on his way to 75 not out. Our final score of 206-6 in the 37th over sounds like an easy win and we still had Ollie and Oscar to bat, but at 78-6, I don’t think we would have registered much on WinViz.
