07/09 Widmer End (Away)

Updated: Sep 14, 2020

Result: Won by 75 runs

Toss: WE elected to bowl

Great game again yesterday and another commanding team performance. Unusually for us, it was a timed game which we haven’t played for a little while. I lost the toss again and we were put in on a surprisingly damp and slow track. Paul and Alex got us off to a steady start with Gaurav joining Paul after Alex fell for a brisk 11. As Paul departed for a well crafted 22, Uma joined Gaurav and started to push the scoring rate along. When Gaurav nicely picked out the fielder while on 32, Uma was joined by David and the acceleration phase was definitely in top gear, only briefly interrupted by the departure of Uma for 48. Mark joined David and they carried on in the same fashion with David finally perishing for 46 and Mark for 26. This left Akshay and Rajiv to knock the final few runs and we closed on a very healthy 210 for 6.

In reply, Vish (7-1-16-2) and Rajiv (7-0-27-1) kept them very much on the back foot, taking wickets and keeping the run rate low and making a win for them more challenging. Sachin (6-1-21-2) bowled particularly well and along with Sarwant senior, Akshay (6-0-38-0), maintained the pressure in the middle overs. Whilst Widmer End looked unlikely to be able to chase the runs down, they did have one settled batsman approaching his 50 who could have helped them bat out for a draw. In the absence of Bob, it was time to dust off the almost never used spin skills of the chairman who duly obliged by removing him with a C&B. Paul ended his spell (3-1-13-1) while David (3-0-10-0) at the other end kept the pressure on. The finishers then started their spells and Gaurav (3-0-9-1) and Uma (3.1-1-8-3) proved way too good for the remaining batsmen.

A very good win in a very nice game at a very nice ground against a very nice opposition who, even better, also had a very nice bar (selling very nice draught Rebellion) which was open after the very nice game.
