A reduced 30 over game lost to the weather which is unusual this season but we did get some batting practice. Paul(11) and Gaurav(18) got us off to a brisk start on a humid day with a dampish wicket. Paul went to one which kept a little low and Gaurav was bowled by one which clipped the top of the stumps. Alex(5) top edged a cut shot, Vaibhav got another one that kept low but Uma and Seb steadied the ship with a 50 run partnership with Seb adding 25 of those. Samar added a classy looking 9, and Akshay was run for 2. This bought Matt to the crease and he smashed two fours in his 10 not out to end the innings. Uma, meanwhile, finished on 91 not out at the other end as he once again anchored the Chesham Bois innings and got us up to a defendable 178 off our 30 overs. Sadly we didn’t get to see how Penn Street got on against that total as the intermittent drizzle became fairly continuous. A great bunch of cricketers and a very enjoyable game of cricket against Penn Street in our first game against them for over 20 years. Hopefully now a regular fixture.

Uma’s Masterclass Anchors Bois Before the Deluge

In what has been a remarkably dry season, the weather finally caught up with Chesham Bois this weekend, forcing a reduced 30-over contest for our first fixture against Penn Street in over 20 years. While the elements ultimately had the final say, the day provided some excellent batting practice and a fantastic spirit of cricket between two historic local sides.

Opting to bat first on a humid day with a dampish, unpredictable wicket, openers Paul (11) and Gaurav (18) got the Bois off to a brisk, positive start. However, the conditions soon began to play tricks; Paul fell to a delivery that kept low, and Gaurav was unfortunate to be bowled by a ball that just clipped the top of his off-stump.

Penn Street's bowlers capitalised on the variable bounce, quickly removing Alex (5) via a top-edged cut and trapping Vaibhav (0) to another low-stayer.

Enter Uma and Seb. The pair put together a crucial, stabilizing 50-run partnership to wrestle back momentum. Seb played beautifully for his 25, showing great composure under pressure. Following Seb's departure, Samar chipped in with a classy 9, while Akshay (2) was unfortunately run out.

Matt then joined the fray, injecting late fireworks into the innings by smashing two boundaries in a quick-fire 10 not out. But the undisputed headline of the innings belonged to Uma. Playing a truly brilliant anchor role, Uma carried his bat to finish on a magnificent 91 not out, single-handedly guiding Chesham Bois to a highly competitive and defendable total of 178/7 off their 30 overs.

Unfortunately, we never got to see our bowlers defend the total. The intermittent drizzle turned into a continuous downpour during the innings break, forcing the umpires to abandon the match.

Despite the damp ending, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day against a great bunch of cricketers. We thoroughly look forward to making this fixture a regular highlight of our summer calendar in the coming years!
